 The Jim Jarmusch Collection (18.)

His first six films on Blu-Ray. Out on October 6th from Soda Pictures.

Jim Jarmusch is one of the great idiosyncratic figures of US independent film making, a true original and his unhurried, unflustered style is that of a man who bucks no influence or homage to anything else in the film world; he seems to be working to his own set of rules. If he is to doff his cap to an influence it is likely to be author, poet, musician or artist.

In Grand Old Duke of York terms, this boxset of the first six films by the leading figure in US Indie cinema, is the marching to the top of the hill section of the story. Starting with his first feature Permanent Vacation from 198- it sees him marching up to career pinnacle Dead Man, the William Blake infused western starring Johnny Depp, but frustratingly stops just before Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai which also has strong case for being his masterpiece.

From there it would be harsh to describe what follows as a descent exactly but the subsequent films have seen the talent ossify somewhat.

Still, that's a problem for another boxset. Reviews of all the films will appear over the coming weeks.

Permanent Vacation (1980.)

Stranger Than Paradise. (1984.)

Down By Law. (1987.)

Mystery Train (1989.)

Night On Earth. (1991.)

Dead Man. (1995.)
