Last Breath (12A.)

Directed by Richard da Costa, Alex Parkinson.

Featuring Chris Lemons, David Yuasa, Duncan Allcock, Craig Frederick, Michal Chichorski, Stuart Anderson. 88 mins.

In this tale of man against adversity, a commercial diver working in the North Sea finds himself stuck at the bottom of the sea with just five minutes of oxygen left and half an hour till he can be rescued.

Combining footage of the actual events, interviews and recreations, this documentary is slickly put together and a compelling watch. The claustrophobic world of saturation diving, where groups of divers have to bunk up together for weeks on end in tiny compression chambers is a fascinating one, and the terror of being lost and alone below the ocean is expertly expressed.

Touching the Void, Kevin MacDonald's classic mountain set tale of surviving against the odds, provided a really profound insight in what it was to be human. Last Breath is a gripping story that doesn't have any great resonance beyond enthralling you for ninety minutes.
